When we entered the classroom, we got the assignment to have a debate. We did not know the basics of having a debate, but by trying we formulated different rules which are important in a debate. One of the statements we talked about was: “energy drinks shouldn’t be available at schools and sports-centres”.
We were split in groups and mine was agreeing with this statement, it was hard to agree to this because I don’t, but one of the things we were also taught is that you need to have empathy. There were several points that we had to know: empathy, listening, supporting something you believe in, make a story out of your argument, use evidence, think ahead, and make arguments vivid. We had several arguments, then went back to our seats to make notes on the computer.
These points were made by our teacher to improve our debating skills. Listening was of importance, because listening to the other team’s arguments meant that we could create counterarguments and make it an interesting debate. Making arguments vivid and using evidence were also two very important points; they make sure that our arguments are not misinterpreted and that they come over a lot better.
The lesson was pretty fun and we learned a lot about how to debate properly. We all had to talk at least once, so everyone had a chance to practice their new-learned skills.
